Glebe Chapel

About us

Glebe Chapel is an independent church which has been established for more than 40 years and has grown over those years and is continuing to grow.  We are not affiliated to any other church but seek to follow the teachings of the New Testament and the examples of the early church as found in the book of Acts.  We do not have an individual leader such as a pastor or vicar but have a leadership team who seek to guide the church, the members of this team are known as elders

As individual members we are just so happy that we have been brought into a relationship with God through believing in the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God, knowing that, because Jesus died we can know forgiveness, peace and the reality of eternal life, now.  We have forgiveness, because when Jesus died, He paid the price for my sin, and the promise of the Bible is: “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved…” (Acts 16:31).  We have peace, because we rely upon the completed work of Jesus which does not require me to do anything, apart from believe, and we have eternal life, because Jesus has brought us into a permanent relationship with God, which we enjoy now and which will never end.

As a church we feel that we cannot keep this amazing news to ourselves and want to share this message with all of the people of Newent and the surrounding areas.  This is not just a responsibility of the church but also of each individual.  In order to encourage this we believe that as a church and as individuals we need to show the love, care and concern of God in real and practical ways to all people.  We need to have a real relationship with God and as any relationship this has to be living and growing on a daily basis in order to flourish.  This involves being obedient to what the Bible teaches, including daily reading of the Bible and prayer and enjoying meeting together with other Christians as often as possible.  We also believe that one of our main functions is to give thanks to God for who He is, for what He has done for us and to live for Him day by day; this is known as worship.

In our church we meet regularly for various types of services: ‘Breaking of Bread’, perhaps better known as a communion service, where we meet in obedience to what Jesus asked us to do, “Remember Me”.  This is a time of quiet reflection, singing and individuals leading the church in audible praise and worship.  Our ‘Morning Service’ is an opportunity for individuals who do not yet have a relationship with God to get to know about Him and His desire to have a relationship with us.  During this service we seek to cover practical topics, such as success, depression, relationships, for example, to show how God can help in the practical situations of life as well as affecting our spiritual lives.  A most important time is when we meet for prayer.  This is, we believe, our source of power for doing what God wants us to do, not in our own strength, but through the power and strength that He supplies.  Finally, we meet to study the Bible together.  This is done mainly in ‘Home Groups’ which are groups of around 10-12 who meet in various homes throughout the area, on most nights in the week.  There are also times when we meet together as a whole church to hear Bible teaching.

There are also various ‘outreach’ groups where we seek to be an influence for God in the community, from the young to those who are more senior.  Full details of these can be found either in ‘What’s On’  on this website or in the ‘Prayer Diary’ section of our ‘Gateway’ magazine.
